I've read many debates between the JD 4200 and KUB 2400. I would like response to this: I think the 4200 is going to be too heavy for my mowing needs ( some areas may be too soft, plus I need to mow over a mound septic). So with that in mind would you go for the 2400 and get the extra hp ( I will be getting a loader, box blade, mid 60" mower ) or start looking at the 4100 and 2100. I guess my real question is this: “Even though they may not be a direct comparison, which tractor would you rather have – JD 4100 or KUB 2400?”

Guy,Have you looked at a Kubota 2710, I think you will see it matches up much better, it is a 27 horse tractor that weighs in around 1700 lbs around 1000 lbs less than a 4200 but with the same capicitys. ....

I don't know about the kubota's but I like my 4100. It is a lot more tractor than Iexpected. Absolutely no problems! I think most tractors are pretty similar, so I would go with whatever dealer you feel more comfortable with. Look for a good reputationof service after the sale! ....

With compaction its not the weight; its the pressure that counts. You can changethis a bunch by going to a different tire. Think of it this way: A 110 lb gal in high heels can put dents in a linoleumfloor. The 220 lb guy in dress shoes won't leave a mark. ....

Thanks Roger, I know what you say is true, but I don't know of a tire that will make that big of difference. The septic designer says you can drive a small skid loader on as long as you have on tracks (ie “dress shoes”) but no tractors. ....

Guy,As with anything, it depends upon YOUR needs. You mainly mentioned your concernsabout finish mowing. IMHO, I would opt for the JD4100 hands down. The biggest problempeople mention about the 4100 is NO Backhoe! If that will never be an issue, seemslike a logical choice. Kubota on the other hand offers a wider selection of motors,in basically the same tractor platform. I would choose a Kubota 2710 over the B2400, but both are very nice units. Do you need that much HP for 60" finish mower? My advise, assuming finish mowing will consist of 80% or more of your need, have both the JD,Kubota brought to your house, and take a ride around a few trees and insome of your tight spots. Or at a minimum, drive one at the dealer. My guess is that youwill be spending money at the JD dealer. If you need a backhoe and implements requiring the extra HP,you may be happier with the Kubota 2710 or B2400. ....

I'm sure you have the spec sheets for the tractors you mentioned;however, you need to first and foremost settle on the basic tractorsize. This is a fundamental personal decision you must make.A 2600 lb tractor "feels" different than a 1700 lb tractor.Also, in recent years manufacturers have been packing smaller tractorswith larger hp engines. Don't assume this is always good. Justa trend for the yuppies.Tractor sizes (weights) need to be matched to engine hp. A 1700 lb Kubota will notmatch a 2600 lb JD, especially when you are using a loader, or 3 pointimplements. Heavier earth work requires a heavier tractor. ....

There is alot of merit to the tire Width / weight argument. The wider the Tire the lower the pounds per square inch, and also the worse they are in snow. McCord makes "super wide turf "flotation Tires" that allow FullSize tractors over 5k pounds to ride right over golf fairways leaving them groomed and perfectly smooth like a baby's cheek. ....
